“Kids Window Art, from Sarah”

Below is a picture of our 2-yr-old grandson Emmett, at his home in Goleta, CA. It warmed my heart this Christmas to see his mom Megan continuing one of the most beloved rituals from her after-school play dates, creating seasonal decorations to display in the windows. See the paper snowflakes? Emmett helped make those.

When our older two girls, Sarah and Megan were school age, “Auntie Sarah” would often have us over. It was a delight to climb up the stone steps and into her adorable Pt. Loma house. There were tasty snacks, inviting soft rugs to spread out on, lots of happy conversation of events of the day, colorful art supplies, kids books and Sarah’s neat row of photo albums (always updated), Ashley and Carl’s collection of toys, and games to play, inside and outside in a shaded storybook yard.

Prior to each holiday, excitement grew for the day Sarah would set out new art materials for the kids to create their themed works. The tall traditional bay window facing the street had at least 16 panes in the middle section. When finished, one original creation taped to each glass pane, the overall project made a remarkable impact, prompting smiles, and engaging people as they walked by. Neighbors looked forward to these installations. Year after year, we all enjoyed the joy they brought and the fun many little friends shared in making them.

Some might have thought that the glitter and the construction paper hearts and flags and trees and pumpkins and flowers and bunnies marred the family’s beautiful view of the boats on the bay, but not so. Everyone gained much more from that window besides a view… Kids Art Admired, brought to you with great enthusiasm by Sarah... decades ago then, and to this day and far beyond still, I’m certain.
